Abstract

The Master’s thesis is devoted to the corpus-based analysis of English transportation terminology in the domain of international freight, with special attention to structural, semantic, and functional characteristics of transport-related terms as they appear in authentic professional texts. The relevance of the research stems from the growing globalisation of transport systems, the increase in multimodal freight operations, and the need for accurate, standardized terminology to ensure effective international communication, legal clarity, and operational safety in logistics. Relevance of the research topic. In the context of expanding international trade and digitalised logistics chains, English has become the dominant language of transportation documentation, commercial communication, and professional standards. Transport terminology is highly dynamic: new processes, technologies, and regulatory norms constantly stimulate the emergence of new terms and the semantic evolution of existing ones. Accurate understanding and interpretation of transport terminology is essential for drafting contracts, preparing shipping documents, ensuring regulatory compliance, preventing misunderstandings between stakeholders, and avoiding financial losses. Since professional communication relies on precision and unambiguity, a systematic corpus analysis of transport terms reveals their actual usage patterns, frequency, collocations, terminological variation, and translation challenges. Therefore, the study contributes to the harmonisation of English and Ukrainian terminological systems in the field of international freight. The purpose of the study is to establish, describe, and classify structural semantic features of English transport terminology and to analyse its functioning in authentic texts through corpus methods, with further comparison of English terms and their Ukrainian equivalents.
